Aelsa’s Baptism

22 07 2007

Sunday was a big day for us. Our firstborn was baptized on the shores of Lake Michigan. God’s grace was so evident throughout the entire day, beginning with beautiful weather and safety for all our guests.

We hosted a luncheon on the lake before hand and had a delightful time of fellowship with people from our church, a couple other homeschool families and even some family from out of town. During lunch, one gentlemen who went jogging by pointed to the sky and said, “See what happens when God’s people get together?”

It was fun to consider the promises of God while looking at the “rainbow” in the sky. The scripture passage that we chose for the service was one that Aelsa has memorized this year.

“For let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Therefore God has highly exalted Him, and has given Him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of heavenly ones, and of earthly ones, and of ones under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” Phil 2:5-11.

Witnesses, 2007

One of the highlights of the service was Aelsa’s testimony, I had been working with her for the last few days on it, but I was the only one beside her that knew what she was going to say. It was beautiful.

Testify, 2007

“As long as I can remember I’ve been taught about the saving blood and undeserved love of Jesus. I cannot recollect a specific conversion experience, however, I have placed my faith in Christ and lean on Him ONLY for salvation. Romans 10 vs. 9 promises: “That if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.” I rest in this promise.

I’d like to thank God for placing me in a home that has taught me how to honor Him from an early age, keeping me from many painful and destructive behaviors. However, I do not trust in my good works, but in His death and resurrection alone.

One verse that we have chosen as an encouragement is Ephesians 5:1 and 2, which says: “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.”

It is my prayer that I will be an imitator of God and will grow in wisdom and walk worthy of Him.”

Grandpas Prayer

A Grandfather’s Prayer, 2007

We were so grateful that my parents could be at the baptism as they prepare to head out of the country for a few years. Dad prayed for Aelsa after her testimony:

“As Aelsa is publicly demonstrating her faith in Jesus Christ for her salvation and her commitment to following You, I pray that her heart would be fully yours and that she would live in loving obedience to your Spirit. That she would understand, along with all the saints the fullness and the greatness of your love which surpasses knowledge. That she would join herself with your people as a part of your Body, the church, so that she can know the fullness of a God and be rooted and grounded in love. And that she would be sent into the world as one who has the ministry of reconciliation as she witnesses of your great love and grace through Jesus Christ.

We pray, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ will live in the power of His resurrection and faithfully look for Him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and forever.”

Generational Blessing

Generational Blessing, 2007

After the baptism, Dad blessed her with a prayer based on Colossians…

“Our Father who is in heaven how blessed is Your name in all of the earth!

In You alone can we trust. In You alone do we find life, and life eternal, through Jesus Christ. You are faithful and true, and in You there is no weakness or deficiency.

How we praise You for Your love and mercy towards us and for Your salvation in Christ Jesus. We praise you that in Him we are blessed with all spiritual blessings in the heavenly places.

I pray for my precious granddaughter, Aelsa, that she would be especially blessed as a woman of integrity, love, and grace – that she would endure faithfully to the end, through Your lavish grace which You pour out on all of Your children.

May she be blessed with a life that is filled with peace and joy that comes from abiding in You. We pray she be blessed with a humble spirit that seeks You with all of her heart. and she would be blessed by finding her satisfaction and joy in serving You, and others, in love.

May she be blessed with a gentle and meek spirit that impacts all around her with Your love and grace so that the reality of Christ Jesus will be seen in her.

I pray that she would be blessed with discernment and be filled with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that she will walk in a manner worthy You. That she would then please You in all respects; bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in her knowledge, and love of You.

May she prosper in every way as her soul prospers in You and may she actively seek out Your Kingdom and Your righteousness above all else.

Lord Jesus Christ, we know that You are able to keep Aelsa from stumbling and to make her stand in the Father’s presence as one who is blameless – and that You will do that with great joy. With her, we now declare Your glory, and majesty, and dominion, and authority, both now in our lives, and also forever more, Amen.”

After the service, we had those present sign her Baptism Certificate as witnesses of her vows, promising to uphold her as a community of faith. I hope that the certificate will be “Stones of Rememberance” for generations to come.

Speak Softly, 2007

There’s just something about a boy with a stick. Add water, and there’s an afternoon.

From Job 38

Have you entered the springs of the sea?
Or have you walked in search of the depths?
Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth?
Tell Me, if you know all this.

Do you know it, because you were born then,
Or because the number of your days is great?
Have you entered the treasury of snow,
Or have you seen the treasury of hail,

By what way is light diffused,
Or the east wind scattered over the earth?
Who has divided a channel for the overflowing water,
Or a path for the thunderbolt,

To cause it to rain on a land where there is no one,
A wilderness in which there is no man;
To satisfy the desolate waste,
And cause to spring forth the growth of tender grass?

Men in a Boat

Bass Lake, 2007

“Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.”

True, unless he doesn’t like fish…

We spent last week with our parents. First with Pamela’s parents for a few days around the Fourth of July, then some time with mine on Bass Lake in Brainerd, MN. Lots of great memories. One of the highlights of the trip was the time when it was just me, the boys and the grandpas. Not a lot of serious discussion (though there was some: “Boys, you have to try to think like a fish…”) but concentrated time that was all about teaching–though none of us really thought about it at the time.

From Bat House construction and playing catch in Rhinelander, to bobbers and playing catch in Brainerd–we are grateful for the lessons of life and faith from the men of God that we call Dad/Grandpa. These days will be remembered for many, many years to come. Thanks.

From Job 12

“But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you;
And the birds of the air, and they will tell you;
Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you;
And the fish of the sea will explain to you.

Who among all these does not know
That the hand of the LORD has done this,
In whose hand is the life of every living thing,
And the breath of all mankind?

Does not the ear test words
And the mouth taste its food?
Wisdom is with aged men,
And with length of days, understanding.

“With Him are wisdom and strength,
He has counsel and understanding.
